Communication of Muybridge

Muybridge and the development of movement.

Mubridge best known for "The Horse in Motion" The Video shown below is the famous extract that is composed of photographic shots. This concept catches movement to the extent of portraying speed and direction into an 2d image. The series of photographs stand as one of the earliest forms of Videography.

The Horse In Motion is a structured video composed of a range of photographic shots. These shots where then arranged to compose a short repetitive pattern which reflects the horses locomotion. Allowing muscles, bones and speed and direction to be a visual effect.  Muybridge then developed the study of animals locomotion into a human beings and experimented with exploring the human body shape reflecting the same visual elements.
Mini  Concept Inspiration

Muybridge The Concept of Movement

From Muybridge's study of the human body I will further develop and explore the natural form of the human body and also start to research into photographic negatives and start to portray the idea of movement through a combination or designs.

Fusion Argument

Lifting Sport

Hopping Hope

Complex Couple

Fabric Movement
These examples of photographic shots compose a final film towards the end of this post. This technique of producing arrange of movement from simply taking a variety of still images can allow a complex film dedicated to the study of Body Movement.
The Run Of Life

The Concept of Photographic Art

The Prior research board has allowed me to develop a knowledge of the human body as a form of movement therefore linking to the earlier brief, which proves movement is a form of communication.
Therefore using Muybridges technique of composing a series of movement within photographic shots, I will start to research into the final videographic image which is composed through my prior research.

A Textural Concept Introduced To A Muybridge Image

Motions Of The Human Body

  • Motion of height change
  • Direction change captured from side to front
  • The motion of Speed
  • The natural Body shape
  • Muscles contracting
  • Body tensing
  • Joints rotating
  • Skin stretching
  • Facial expression of concentration.
This short clip of the human body explores all the areas shown above and this has inspired me to use the human body's natural form as a concept within my future designs.

This short clips demonstrates the study of the human form in motion. with the skin changing form as the man walks.

Exploring Speed and Direction to the limits

This Last film explores the movement of the body through a variety of simply movements that portray the bodies structure. It demonstrates the movement of muscles contracting and the bones and joints moving depending on a variety of the bodies moves used.
    • Jumps
    • Twists
    • Bends
    • Thrusting
    • walking
    • Running
    • Hopping
    • Skipping
    • Positive Facial expressions
    • Fast, energetic movements
All these listed body movements explore the idea of positive freedom to a human being, whilst in a contrast which you do not see within Muybridges films is:

    • Tension
    • Tight forms
    • Hugging the body itself
    • Negative slow motion
    • Negative facial expressions

     EXPLORING MY OWN IMAGERY

Muybridge has now inspired me to develop my own photographic shots into a moving image therefore i have explored composing a range of shots together from a previous photo shoot.

The Inspiration of a Structure and Layout

I found this image within a Shortlist Magazine and It reminded me instantly of Muybridge's concept of capturing action within a stripped, formal layout. This inspired me to experiment with a stripped film concept within designs:
